Respiratory Medicine

Prerequisites: Level 1 Medicine subjects
13 lectures, 39 hours guided learning sessions, 13 hours synthesising sessions. Full year.
Available to level 2 students enrolled in the MBBS program.

This subject will examine the normal structure and function of the respiratory system, including the effects of special respiratory conditions. Students will be introduced to the major pathologies associated with the respiratory tract, together with approaches to clinical examination of these conditions. The subject will also introduce the main pharmacological approaches to the treatment of respiratory disease, as well as examine the social impact of respiratory disease.
Learning Objectives:
- know and understand the structure and function of the respiratory system;
- know and understand the mechanisms of lung ventilation, respiratory gas exchange and the control of breathing;
- know and understand the basic pathologies of the respiratory tract and the approaches to clinical investigation of these diseases;
- know and understand the basic approaches to the treatment of respiratory disease;
- ability to undertake basic respiratory function tests and interpret the results;
- ability to perform a basic clinical examination of the respiratory system and demonstrate professional attitudes towards clinical examination;
- ability to communicate with patients, their parents and relatives effectively and with empathy;
- develop an awareness of the social impact of respiratory disease and the role of public education and health promotion.
Assessment by end-of-year integrated examination which will consist of a written component (67%) and a practical component (33%). Students will also be required to undertake informal on-course assessment tasks.
