Cardiovascular Medicine

Prerequisites: Level 1 Medicine subjects

13 lectures, 39 hours guided learning sessions, 13 hours synthesising sessions. Full year.

Available to level 2 students enrolled in the MBBS program.

This subject will focus on the normal development of the heart and vascular system and introduce the student to cardiovascular disease. Skills acquisition include: measurement and understanding of ECG, blood pressure, cardiac auscultation, the basic workings of the echocardiogram and other diagnostic modalities. The student will develop a heightened appreciation of the importance of scientific investigation to the advances in cardiovascular medicine.

Learning Objectives:

  1. knowledge and understanding of the basic structure and function of the normal heart, the great vessels and vascular system;
  2. introductory knowledge and understanding of clinical cardiovascular disease including stroke;
  3. knowledge and skills acquisition of ECG, blood pressure, cardiac auscultation, the basic workings of the echocardiogram and other diagnostic modalities;
  4. appreciation of a cardiologist’s practice, a cardio-thoracic surgical facility and an interventionalist radiology clinic;
  5. understanding of the foundational importance of basic science in health and disease.

Assessment by end-of-year integrated examination which will consist of a written component (67%) and a practical component (33%). Students will also be required to undertake informal on-course assessment tasks.
