Techniques in Marine Biology

Available to DipResMeth, AdvCertResMeth, GDipSc, MAppSc and MSc students.

This subject will provide students with practical introduction to basic techniques relevant to marine research, e.g. methods of animal handling and aquarium maintenance (fish and marine invertebrates), histotechniques (including histo-chemistry), microscopy, biological illustration, photography and video techniques, taxonomic and nomenclatural procedures, scientific writing, preparation and presentation. Various staff members in the department will be involved in this subject which will emphasise hands-on training through the practical and demonstration sessions.

Assessment by three written assignments (30%); on-course practical work (70%).
