Minor Project and Seminar (Tropical Marine Ecology and Fisheries Biology)

Townsville

Prerequisites: Consult HoS

First or second semester.

Available to DipResMeth, AdvCertResMeth, MAppSc and MSc students.

Candidates may spend approximately eight weeks collecting data as part of a pilot study for the MSc thesis research (DipResMeth, AdvCertResMeth and MSc candidates) or as a small project (MAppSc candidates). Candidates in the former programs may trial and evaluate techniques to be used in the major project, collect preliminary data and evaluate a sampling program which is continued in the major project, or, collect data on one aspect of a broader topic which will provide a foundation upon which to frame the broader questions. The topic will be selected after consultation with appropriate supervisor(s) and the Course Coordinator. Candidates will be required to write up the results of their research in the form of a scientific paper and to give a 30 minute seminar to other students and staff. Both the oral and written reports should include a critical appraisal of the objectives, methodology, results and future directions of the project.

Assessment by project report and seminar.
