Prerequisites: Level 2 LA subjects (LLB students); 6 units of level 2 subjects (BSc students)

Available to students enrolled in LLB or BSc.

Introduction to the principles of coastal management and relevant international law; examination of the Commonwealth constitutional role, Commonwealth and State maritime boundaries, coastal policies, marine and coastal resource exploitation, pollution and planning issues; examination of relevant Commonwealth and State legislation in particular Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Act 1975 (Cth), Coastal Protection and Management Act 1995 (Qld), Nature Conservation Act 1992 (Qld), Environmental Protection Act 1994 (Qld), Fisheries Act 1994 (Qld)

Learning Objectives:

  1. acquire a sound understanding of the principles and concepts of coastal management and their application to the international, national and state coastal management regimes;
  2. acquire a knowledge of international, federal and state statute law.

Assessment by research paper (70%); participation (30%) (subject to variation).
