Foundations of Japanese 1

13 lectures (video-conferenced to Cairns), 39 tutorials (over three weekend workshops in Cairns). First semester.

This subject is designed for complete beginners. It introduces the two syllabary writing systems hiragana and katakana as well as the fundamentals of kanji, and starts building elementary conversation skills.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to equip students with the skills necessary to introduce themselves and exchange greetings; discuss countries of origin, occupations, fields of study and hobby interest; deal with numbers – phone numbers, prices, etc.; talk about time; talk about families; order meals and drinks and to deal with elementary shopping tasks and read and write simple passages in hiragana and katakana.

Assessment by assignments, in-class tests, oral/aural and written examinations: listening (25%); speaking (25%); reading (25%); writing (25%).
