Cross-cultural Training for Indigenous Contexts

Townsville

Second semester, mixed mode. Students are provided with print materials and also attend an on-campus component totalling 6 days.

This subject examines the cross-cultural contexts of Indigenous Australian and non-Indigenous Australia by engaging students in processes of learning about the relationship between these two groups, across time to the present and for the future. This is a practical subject designed to provide students with opportunities to develop effective strategies for working cross-culturally with Indigenous Australians.

Learning Objectives:

  1. increase knowledge and understanding of the histories, cultures and identities of Indigenous Australian peoples;
  2. develop further understanding of the impact of specific legislation and policies on Indigenous Australians;
  3. develop understanding and knowledge of legislation and policies of equity in the workplace;
  4. develop skills for cross-cultural interactions in the work place context;
  5. demonstrate increased skills of independent research and academic study.

Assessment by attendance and participation (20%); reflective journal (10%); minor assessment tasks (40%); major assignment of 2000 words (30%).
