Indigenous Community Management and Development 1

This subject provides an introduction to an elective strand of Community Management and Development within the Bachelor of Indigenous Studies. This introductory module will discuss how and why Indigenous community-based organisations were and are formed and their role in service delivery and advocacy. Community-based studies will be contextualised within the Australian political system allowing students to develop a big picture of the nature of Indigenous Affairs within the Australian political system.
Learning Objectives:
- gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of Indigenous Affairs (in the Australian context);
- develop a rights-based terms of reference in critically analysing government policies towards Indigenous Australians;
- develop an understanding of the unique nature of Indigenous organisations and the role of skilful media management;
- gain an understanding of the unique nature between Government/s and Indigenous peoples;
- gain a knowledge of human rights and social justice and the role of advocacy in promoting Indigenous well-being;
- gain an understanding of how community development processes are applied in establishing Indigenous organisations which address Indigenous issues.
Assessment by journal (40%); a 2,000 word essay (40%); oral presentation (20%).
