Linking Indigenousness I
Townsville, Cairns
Block study (on- and off-campus), first and second semester.
Available to BIndgStud and other undergraduate students.
Staff: Assoc. Professor J Herbert.
This subject will provide students with a deeper understanding of some Aboriginal communities. The subject will endeavour to analyse specific Aboriginal communities from a pre-contact perspective; the events and effects of contact with non-Indigenous peoples and the development of post-contact relationships with non-Indigenous society within Australia. The subject will be delivered within identified Aboriginal communities, taught by members of those communities and facilitated through the University. It will provide participants with first hand experiences within contemporary Aboriginal communities, as a means of enhancing their understanding of Aboriginal issues and knowledge.
Learning Objectives:
- gain an understanding of the historical, political, social and cultural frameworks of identified Aboriginal communities;
- gain the ability to identify the mechanisms to conduct appropriate consultation with Aboriginal communities;
- gain an understanding of protocols in conducting consultations within Aboriginal communities;
- develop insights into the processes of Indigenous epistemological and ontological perspectives;
- develop insights into ethical processes in relation to research within Aboriginal communities.
Assessment by attendance (15%); participation (15%); field report (30%); personal journal (40%).
