Writing History

Prerequisites: Admission to honours program

26 hours seminars. First semester.

This subject explores a range of approaches to the writing of history. It focuses on the changing trends in historical writing from the 1950s to the present.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to become familiar with the historical development of the discipline of history;
  2. to acquire competence in research appropriate to the honours level of study;
  3. to gain an appreciation of the diversity of interpretative and theoretical perspectives available to the historian;
  4. to develop skills in the organisation and expression of research findings appropriate to the honours level of study.

Assessment by written critiques of set readings (80%); seminar attendance and participation (20%).
