*NOTE* Crisis of Faith: Belief in Modern Europe

This subject surveys the proliferation of belief systems in Europe since the collapse of medieval religious consensus. This fragmentation of faith will be considered within its social and political framework.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to give students an historical interpretation of changing patterns of belief in early modern and modern Europe;
  2. to introduce students to the relevant debates occurring in the discipline;
  3. to develop advanced skills in historical writing and research.

Assessment by 3,000 word essay (30%); seminar contributions (30%); examination (40%).
