North of Capricorn: History and Heritage

This subject examines aspects of European settlement in north Queensland. It considers the impact of that settlement on indigenous communities and the development of the pastoral, mining and sugar industries and goes on to look at urban development. There will be an emphasis on researching north Queensland history in the context of Queensland heritage legislation and practice.

Learning Objectives:

  1. acquire knowledge of north Queensland’s post-contact history;
  2. acquire skills in research into primary sources including oral and pictorial evidence;
  3. improve skills in analysis and writing up historical materials to a level appropriate to third year studies.

Assessment by research essay (50%); workshop participation (20%); preparation of heritage listing proposal (30%).
