Major topics include: Navigation and early voyaging; the growth of trade, the Iberian kingdoms and Pre-Columbian America; English and French Colonialism in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries; the institution of slavery; colonialism and metropolitan European culture.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to equip students with a broad knowledge of important aspects of the history of European colonialism;
  2. to enhance skills in locating, reading and interpreting historical sources;
  3. to improve written and oral expression.

Assessment by tutorials (30%); bibliographic exercise (10%); major essay (30%); examination (30%).
