This subject examines world history since the end of the Second World War, a period characterised by unprecedented transformations in human existence. Topics for study include: post-colonialism and new political formations; the spread of markets and consumerism; the rise of youth culture and identity politics and the information and genetics revolutions and their implications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. provide an historical perspective on the key elements of contemporary social, political and intellectual life;
  2. develop the capacity to critically evaluate the rich variety of sources available to the historian;
  3. develop research and writing skills.

Assessment by tutorial attendance, participation and assignments (40%); major essay (30%); final examinations (30%).
