A historical survey of the interactions between the various peoples of Asia and Europe, the processes by which these interactions came about and their diverse outcomes. Topics covered include: colonialism; political and economic life; cultural influences and exchanges; and race and collective identities.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop an acquaintance with the richness and diversity of cultural expressions which have contributed to the creation of the contemporary world;
  2. gain a familiarity with the debates surrounding issues in cross-cultural histories;
  3. develop research and writing skills.

Assessment by tutorial attendance, participation and assignments (40%); major essay (30%); final examination (30%).
