This subject examines the historical origins of nationalism, its development in nineteenth-century Europe and subsequent spread around the entire globe. It pays particular attention to the diversity of nationalist ideas and movements and the variety of historical interpretations of nationalism.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an understanding of the historical development of nationalism and its significance in the modern world;
  2. develop a critical appreciation of divergent historical interpretations of nationalism;
  3. develop skills in historical research and writing.

Assessment by tutorial assignments (30%); research essay (40%); examination (30%).
