Age of Extremes: the Twentieth Century

This subject examines major developments in world history in the twentieth century. While giving due consideration to political and economic issues, it also explores the immense social and cultural transformations that have characterised this century.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce students to some of the theories, methodologies and preoccupations of historians in the 1990s;
  2. to provide students with an historical perspective on the important events and changes of the twentieth century;
  3. to develop skills in historical writing and research.

Assessment by examination (35%); major essay (30%); tutorial essay (15%); tutorial activities (20%).
