An introduction to graphic design theory and practice. This is the fifth semester of a six semester advanced program for students studying Graphic Design. Students enrolled in this subject will undertake a series of lectures, tutorials and practical problem solving exercises designed to extend their understanding of graphic design and visual communications practice. Students will undertake a range of advanced projects designed to extend their conceptual and practical skills to a level of proficiency and autonomy appropriate for commercial application in a range of appropriate media. Conceptual and experimental approaches will continue to be emphasised.
Learning Objectives:
- demonstrate a familiarity with innovative and self directed design research methodologies;
- demonstrate a basic understanding of traditional and digital visual communications processes;
- apply appropriate and creative design solutions to given problems and follow these solutions through several production phases in a manner suited to the selected production process;
- utilise available computer software and information resources at an advanced level for creative, research and technical purposes;
- demonstrate a range of analytical and critical skills related to communication design practice;
- commence production of a folio of work suitable for presentation to prospective employers and clients;
- develop an understanding of the legal, financial, moral and philosophical aspects of the graphic design profession;
- develop an understanding of business and task management issues.
Assessment by tutorial presentation (20%); three practical assignments (60%); semester examination (20%). Attendance of less than 80% at practical workshops will render students ineligible for assessment unless prior written approval has been obtained from the lecturer, academic adviser or Head of College.
