Heroism and Humanism: Shakespeare and English Poetry of the Renaissance and Enlightenment

Study of a selection of Shakespeare plays and of non-dramatic poetry by Shakespeare, Marvell, Milton and Pope.

Learning Objectives:

  1. an ability to read dramatic and poetic texts from the 16th century to the 18th century;
  2. a thorough knowledge of the set texts;
  3. a familiarity with the relevant secondary literature;
  4. an awareness of the literary, social and political contexts in which the texts were produced;
  5. advanced essay-writing and literary-critical skills and understanding.

Assessment by two essays of 2,000 words each (40%); tutorial participation (20%); one three-hour examination (40%).
