Engineering Statics

Townsville, Cairns

Inadmissable Subject Combination: CS1001

39 lectures, 26 tutorials, 13 hours practicals. First semester.

Available to engineering students.

Vector mechanics. Particle and rigid body statics. Plane section properties, centroids and area moments of inertia (second moments of area). Equilibrium of a body in two- and three-dimensions. Analysis of simple trusses and frames. Internal forces – axial load, shear force and bending moment. Stress and strain; shear and normal stress; modulus of elasticity and Poisson’s ratio. Bending of beams.

Learning Objectives:

  1. apply the conditions for equilibrium of points and rigid bodies in two- and three-dimensions;
  2. draw and use free body diagrams;
  3. find the area properties of simple plane figures;
  4. solve for member forces in trusses and frames;
  5. draw shear force and bending moment diagrams for beams and frames;
  6. determine bending stresses in beams.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
