Communications Systems 1

Townsville

Prerequisites: EE2201

39 lectures, 21 tutorials, 18 hours practicals. First semester.

Available to level 3 engineering and science students.

Spectra and Fourier techniques. Spectral shaping. Linear (AM, SSB), Exponential (FM, PM), Pulse (PAM, PWM) and Digital modulation schemes (ASK, FSK, PSK, QAM, MSK) and applications. Signal coding (PCM, Delta Modulation, Sigma Delta Modulation, Vocoders). Baseband coding (NRZ, Manchester). Spread spectrum techniques (CDMA, COFDM). Communication Standards for Radio, TV and Mobile applications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate a basic knowledge of the full range of modulation techniques and standards used in analogue and digital communication systems which can then be applied to the design of communication systems.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
