This subject examines current approaches to the teaching and learning of a second language and their underlying theories. It includes consideration of the use of information technologies and multimedia in the study of a second language. The subject has relevance for professional participants with experience in the teaching/learning of English as a Second or Foreign Language or Languages Other Than English.
Learning Objectives:
- identify and describe the theoretical positions of major current approaches in ESL/EFL/LOTE;
- implement a selected approach in the design of curriculum and/or materials;
- analyse potential applications of different technologies in second language teaching and learning.
Assessment by 2,000 word critique of a current approach in second language teaching/learning (40%); 3,000 word or equivalent curriculum project (60%).
