Learning and Teaching About Language

The subject provides the groundwork for understanding functional grammar and the genre approach as it is implemented in Australian schools. It covers the description and analysis of the grammar and meaning of spoken and written English and it also looks at current approaches to the learning and teaching of explicit knowldege about language in a first or second language context.

Learning Objectives:

  1. undertake analysis of lexis, grammar and discourse in real texts;
  2. develop a working knowledge of the Australian genre approach to teaching about language;
  3. develop ideas for raising language awareness as part of a first or second language teaching program.

Assessment by in-class/take home test (50%); curriculum project (50%).
