Integrated Programs in Child Care Centres

Available only to Bachelor of Educational Services (Child Care) students.

The subject will focus on the following topics: curriculum models, guidelines, approaches and practices; developmentally appropriate curriculum for young children in a variety of contexts; integrated approaches to disciplinary knowledge; developmentally appropriate practice; play as a process of learning; parents/care providers/community as partners. The subject also requires five days of practicum experience.

Learning Objectives:

  1. examine various issues, models and practices in the design and implementation of curriculum in child care centres;
  2. demonstrate competence in designing developmentally appropriate curriculum for children in a variety of contexts;
  3. demonstrate an understanding of a range of effective strategies for supporting children’s play and learning across a variety of settings;
  4. satisfactorily complete five days of supervised practicum in a child care centre;
  5. reflect on the students’ own professional development and actions in working with and planning programs for young children.

Assessment by professional development portfolio (50%); critical evaluation of literature on early childhood curriculum issues (50%); satisfactory completion of practicum.
