Solid waste management – introduction to solid waste management, solid waste generation rate, collection, processing of solid waste, disposal by sanitary landfill

Hazardous waste management – definition of hazardous waste, toxicology and risk assessment, risk management, waste minimisation, transportation and storage of hazardous wastes, land disposal

Noise pollution and air pollution – introduction to noise pollution, effects of noise on people, rating systems, transmission of sound, noise pollution control; physical and chemical fundamentals of air pollution, origin and fate of air pollutants, effects of air pollutants, standards and control of air pollution.

Environmental impact assessment – history and background of environmental impact assessment (EIA), context and content of EIA, legislative and procedural basis for EIA in Queensland including SPWDO Act, EP Act, IP Act, IDAS system, role of Local Government; Commonwealth EIA procedures.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to introduce the techniques for solid and hazardous waste management;
  2. to develop the skills for the design of solid waste landfill;
  3. to provide the techniques for noise and air pollution control;
  4. to provide the skills for environmental impact assessment.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
