Systems Engineering and Management 1

Available to civil engineering students.

Systems Engineering: Systems approach to problem solving; Linear programming; Network analysis.

Project Management: Project planning and control; CPM/PERT; Time and cost management; Resource levelling; Project organisation.

Systems Management: Decision analysis; Simulation and policy evaluation; Queuing systems.

Learning Objectives:

  1. learn to make conscious use of systems thinking, approaches and concepts;
  2. develop an attitude for dealing with complexity and uncertainty;
  3. learn the tools and concepts most productive in problem solving such as linear programming, network analysis, simulation and project management;
  4. appreciate the relevance and applicability of these tools to a range of engineering management problems.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
