Design and Construction 1
Townsville
Prerequisites: CS2001
39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals. Second semester.
Available to engineering students.
Introduction to structural behaviour and form; the place of analysis in design process using examples of beams and frames; relationship between bending moment and deflected shapes; approximate analysis of indeterminate structures; influence lines; introduction to working stress and limit state designs; dead loads; live loads; wind loads; an introduction to the use of design codes; design of steel members (tension, compression and flexural members) and their connections; design of timber members and their connections; introduction to civil engineering drawing.
Learning Objectives:
- become familiar with the Australian Codes of Practice in the field of structural engineering;
- be able to design some individual structural elements;
- have a structural feel and appreciation for the importance of load path, deflected shape and approximate analysis;
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
