A general introduction to the Australian legal system; introduction to torts; the law of contract; sale of goods; negotiable instruments; bankruptcy; and introduction to trusts.

Learning Objectives:

  1. state the sources of Australian law;
  2. outline the court systems that operate in Australia;
  3. describe the elements, the significant terms and the operation of contracts;
  4. identify the principles of the law of torts as they apply in a commercial environment;
  5. explain how legislation has affected contracts in a sale of goods context;
  6. describe the bank–customer relationship and the use of negotiable instruments in modern commerce;
  7. explain the mechanisms whereby debtors become bankrupt and the consequences of bankruptcy;
  8. describe the general functioning of trusts in Australia.
