Minerals and Solids Processing

Prerequisites: Level 3 chemical engineering subjects

39 lectures, 6 tutorials, 30 hours practicals. Second semester.

Available to level 4 chemical engineering students.

Introduction to the Australian minerals industry. Particle size reduction, separation, conveying and storage. Sampling and particle size analysis. Screening and classification. Sedimentation thickening and centrifugation. Flow through packed beds and porous media. Filtration. Fluidisation and roasting. Leaching, ion exchange, precipitation and electrochemical processing. Smelting and refining. Design and selection of equipment.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to familiarise students with the Australian mineral processing industry;
  2. to introduce students to the unit operations employed in solids handling;
  3. to familiarise students with design procedures for solids handling.

Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
