39 lectures, 13 tutorials, 26 hours practicals. First semester.
Introduction to the chemical process industry, including important petrochemical, agricultural, and mineral processing operations in Australia. Systems of units and conversion between them; dimensions and dimensional analysis for determining groups of significant variables. Applications of stoichiometry to material balances including the substances, recycle, by-pass and purge.
Learning Objectives:
- to help students develop the ability to interpret process flow sheets;
- to help students develop the ability to perform material balances using different systems of units.
Assessment by examination (50%-70%); on-course assessment (30%-50%).
