Minor Project and Seminar Environmental Chemistry

Prerequisites: Consult HoS
6 weeks on an approved laboratory research project in environmental chemistry and the presentation of a seminar. First or second semester.
Available to postgraduate students undertaking the postgraduate diploma or Master of Science degree in environmental chemistry.

Candidates may spend approximately six weeks collecting data as part of a pilot study for their masters thesis, or the dissertation of their postgraduate diploma. Approved subject areas include: marine chemistry, environmental chemistry, marine pollution, chemical oceanography, environmental analytical chemistry and environmental geochemistry. The research topic will be selected only after consultation with the course coordinator and the appropriate supervisor. Candidates will be required to write up the results of their research in the form of a report (maximum 40 pages) and to give a 20 minute seminar to other students and staff.
Learning Objectives:
- to train students in the basic principles of research in environmental chemistry.
Assessment by production of a written report and seminar. Both the oral and written reports should include a critical appraisal of the objectives, methodology, results and future directions of the project.
