A broad introduction to contemporary biology, from the way cells, organs and individual organisms function, through to molecular biology, genetics and the processes underlying the diversity of life.
Learning Objectives:
- to gain an appreciation of the cellular basis of living organisms;
- to gain an appreciation of the relationship between structure and function of cells and cellular organelles;
- to understand the basics of the genetic control of cellular activities;
- to learn about the basic principles of evolutionary biology;
- to understand the basics of the mechanism of inheritance.
Assessment by theory examination (65%); practical work (20%); tutorial work (10%); class test (5%).
