Independent Project and Thesis

Townsville, Cairns

Prerequisites: Consult HoS

Full year.

Available to students completing the MSc by research only.

The student, in collaboration with the project supervisor is required, within the first month of candidature, to submit an outline research proposal together with a proposed work plan and an estimation of the costings. Progress of the work will be monitored by means of regular consultation with the project supervisor(s).

It may be more convenient for some projects to be based off-campus (i.e. at a neighbouring research institution). Arrangements will then be made for joint supervision involving a staff member from the department and from the collaborating institution.

The student will be required to present a seminar towards the end of the period of candidature, preferably early in the writing-up process.

Learning Objectives:

  1. to provide training in the planning and execution of a program of original research in agricultural science;
  2. to provide training in collation and analysis of data and in their interpretation;
  3. to draw appropriate conclusions from research findings and to present the completed work in the form of a thesis.

Assessment by the submission of a thesis which should conform with the guidelines specified by the Faculty. The thesis will be examined by two assessors external to the University.
