Australian Indigenous Studies 1

First semester by flexible delivery mode. It will be taught through a combination of external package plus tutorials delivered weekly on campus.

This subject aims to provide a broad overview of the history of colonisation in Australia and its aftermath. It provides a background to the present interaction between Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in Australian society today and a chronological guide to Government policies.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop an appreciation of the great diversity with Indigenous Australian cultures, histories and contemporary experiences;
  2. understand Indigenous Australian social infrastructures by the analysis of the effects of the policies of segregation, assimilation, integration, self-determination and social justice;
  3. utilise a variety of sources to increase understanding, synthesise information and formulate hypotheses.

Assessment by major essay (40%); journal activities (20%); tutorial presentation (25%); attendance and participation (15%).
