Introduction to Exercise Biology

Physiology and metabolic adaptation to exercise: a comparative synthesis; structural and functional organisation of skeletal muscle; respiratory physiology of exercise; cardiovascular physiology of exercise; exercise metabolism; physiology and biochemistry of fatigue and recovery; pharmacology of exercise; foods, nutrition and exercise performance and recovery; gender, race and age differences in the physiological and biochemical response to exercise; exercise adaptations to high altitude; limitations to exercise and high humidity.

Learning Objectives:

  1. overview of biochemical and physiological adaptations to exercise;
  2. organ, tissue and cellular interrelationships;
  3. effect of different environments on exercise biochemistry and performance.

Assessment by a three-hour written examination (70%); practical assignments (30%).
