Clinical Biochemistry 1

Prerequisites: Level 3 standing BBiomedSc

24 lectures, 12 tutorials, 36 hours practical. Block mode in July/August. Flexible delivery.

This subject introduces the student to the clinical chemistry laboratory. The student will be led through fundamental issues of spectrophotometric analysis, quality assurance, basic technical skills and laboratory manual preparation. Organ system function will be reviewed with a focus on the methods required for the determination of disorders and the clinical interpretation of results.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop a working knowledge of quality assurance;
  2. become proficient in basic methods of clinical chemical analysis;
  3. review organ system function;
  4. understand the principles and technical skills required in the investigation of organ system function.

Assessment by theory examination (50%); practical examination/practical reports (35%); assignment (15%).
