This subject examines major issues in cultural heritage through a series of case studies from around the world which explore the challenges of conserving and managing a diverse range of sites and objects. These studies will include topics such as tourism and visitor management at sites like Stonehenge and Lascaux, the illegal trade in antiquities from South America, China and Africa, the impacts of war in the Balkans and the Near East, the role of heritage in creating national and ethnic identity and trends and controversies in heritage legislation. It will also look at heritage practice at the international and national levels, e.g. the work of UNESCO, English Heritage, the U.S. National Parks Service and the Australian Heritage Commission.
Learning Objectives:
- acquire a knowledge of major issues in global heritage;
- develop an understanding of international heritage codes and conventions;
- understand the role of heritage practitioners in managing heritage places;
- examine the application of heritage principles in diverse international contexts;
- develop an understanding of the importance of heritage in the modern world;
- develop an appreciation of the different concepts of heritage.
Assessment by tutorial presentation and paper (25%); major essay (25%); two-hour end of semester examination (50%).
