James Cook University Subject Handbook - 2001

ENVIRONMENTAL CHEMISTRY

The Graduate Diploma of Science in Environmental Chemistry by coursework and short research project and the degree of Master of Applied Science/Master of Science in Environmental Chemistry, by coursework and research are offered through an inter-school program run jointly by the School of Biomedical and Molecular Sciences and the School of Earth Sciences. Both programs focus on key chemical and geochemical processes specific to the tropics.

Students may follow either of two strands designed to meet interests in marine or terrestrial Environmental Chemistry. The coursework emphasises the application of advanced environmental analytical techniques to the sampling and analysis of the atmosphere, natural waters, soils, rocks, minerals, seawater and marine organisms. Students gain a strong background in chemical and geochemical processes in environments as diverse as inland lakes, rivers and estuaries, coastal waters and the atmosphere-ocean system. Attention is given to methods of distinguishing between natural processes and anthropogenic activity. Students may undertake studies in marine chemistry, pollution, atmospheric chemistry and environmental geochemistry using the wide range of modern analytical equipment in the laboratories of the University’s Schools and the Advanced Analytical Centre.

The range of subjects is outlined below.

Prospective students should consult with the Course Coordinator. Within the broad framework of the Award Rules, each student’s program, including weighting of coursework and research, can be tailored to the individual candidate’s background and requirements.
