Human Rights and Social Justice

26 lectures, 12 tutorials or the equivalent in mixed mode on-campus delivery. First semester. Also offered at Mackay campus.
The legal system in Australia; international covenants and conventions; Criminal Law - rights and responsibilities; Family Law - rights and responsibilities; children and young adults’ rights; community issues - neighbours; housing, tenancy; mental health; social security and welfare rights; consumer protection; employment issues; legal rights and responsibilities of social welfare workers.
Learning Objectives:
- develop an understanding of the origins of the law and its relationship to government, and social welfare both at federal and state level;
- develop a framework for understanding the criminal and civil law and the ways in which the law protects civil, political, social, cultural and welfare rights;
- the role of International Declarations and Covenants in Australian law;
- develop the ability to read an Act of Parliament and translate it for client understanding;
- develop an awareness of the social welfare worker’s own legal rights and responsibilities.
Assessment by class presentation (45%); written assignment or examination (55%).
