Issues in Social Policy

This subject follows on from WS1001. It continues to explore the broad question of who benefits from the present philosophies and organisation of the Australian welfare state. The subject explores key issues such as poverty, racism, gender in welfare, the impact of the tax transfer system, unemployment and the labour market.

Learning Objectives:

  1. describe the nature of structural inequality and the role the welfare state plays in this;
  2. identify key issues and problems in Australian society.

Assessment by take home examination (40%); essay (60%).
