Australian Women’s Studies

13 lectures, 24 tutorials or the equivalent in mixed mode on-campus delivery. First semester. Second semester flexible delivery (Townsville and Cairns campuses). Also offered at Mackay campus.

This subject explores the lives, experiences and achievements of Australian women in historical, cultural and contemporary contexts. Interdisciplinary in nature, the subject will draw on insights from a range of disciplines.

Learning Objectives:

  1. demonstrate an understanding of the historical and contemporary position of women in Australian society;
  2. apply appropriate theoretical frameworks and concepts to the analysis of contemporary Australian women’s lives;
  3. discuss and critically evaluate key debates surrounding gender related issues;
  4. distinguish between major theoretical perspectives in women’s studies.

Assessment by a 2,000 word essay (40%); reflective journal (40%); presentation or paper (20%).
