Inadmissable Subject Combination: VA2181 VA2191 VA2192 VA2320 VA2330 VA2340 VA3042

78 hours practicals. First semester.

Available to all students except BVA students whose major area of study is in sculpture. This is also a level 3 Bachelor of Education subject for intending Secondary teachers undertaking a major in art.

Staff: Ms J Hawkins.

This subject is structured so that a person with little or no sculpture experience or facilities can produce works of substance in a non-studio (home environment) or classroom situation with students.

The classes will include demonstrations and their practical application through set technical exercises (using materials such as wire, plaster, papier maché clay, found objects etc.). The students will then combine these skills with their creative ideas to complete four set projects. A charge will be required upon enrolment for use of tools and materials.

Learning Objectives:

  1. gain an appreciation of sculpture processes that do not require sophisticated equipment or facilities;
  2. develop the technical skills and competence necessary to undertake basic sculpture projects;
  3. develop problem-solving skills to assist with creative decision-making;
  4. demonstrate an understanding of safe work practices.

Assessment by four practical projects (20% each); research journal/visual diary (20%). An attendance record of 80% must be met unless approved in writing by the subject coordinator.
