Ceramics Techniques 3

78 hours practicals. Second semester.

Available to all students. This is also a level 3 Bachelor of Education subject for intending Secondary teachers undertaking a major in art.

This subject provides the opportunity for students to explore a range of design techniques for ceramics. Students will apply a selection of the designs they have generated to a variety of functional and/or decorative ceramic ware. Forms will be created using hump and press moulds as well as slab construction techniques. Earthenware glazes will be used. A charge will be required upon enrolment for use of tools and materials.

Learning Objectives:

  1. develop original designs through set exercises which can be applied to basic ceramic slab forms;
  2. explore a range of forming techniques, including the use of simple moulds;
  3. develop the technical skills and competence necessary to undertake basic ceramics projects;
  4. develop problem-solving skills to assist with creative decision-making;
  5. demonstrate an understanding of safe work practices.

Assessment by four practical projects (20% each); research journal/visual diary (20%). An attendance record of 80% must be met unless approved in writing by the subject coordinator.
