Metabolic and other Problems in Neonates

Available to students enrolled in the Postgraduate Diploma of Neonatology.

Review of normal metabolic processes and their physiological, biochemical and pathological manifestations. The embryological development of the gastro-intestinal tract will be reviewed with particular regard to congenital abnormalities and their management. Other problems in the overall management of a sick baby in a Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit will be considered.
Learning Objectives:
- to develop an understanding of basic metabolic processes and their pathology in the neonate;
- to acquire the underpinning knowledge and skills to recognise, investigate and manage the common metabolic and other problems of neonates;
- to acquire the theoretical skills to manage these problems in the context of a modern Level III Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Assessment by assignments (70%); final examination (30%).
