Prerequisites: Entry into clinical stream requires training as a clinical provider
Second semester.
This subject consists of core material covering the humanitarian, political, demographic, epidemiological and organisational context of refugee health. Basic organisational principles of refugee care, in the primary emergency and secondary phases, including triage, immunisation, feeding, establishment of water and sanitation and shelter. An additional clinical skills stream for clinically trained providers is offered to equip field workers with skills such as re-hydration therapy and disease control.
Learning Objectives:
- be aware of the humanitarian, political, demographic, epidemiological and organisational context of refugee health;
- understand organisational priorities of the different stage of refugee settlement;
- knowledge of the basic principles of provision of refugee health care, including guidelines for minimum requirements for water consumption and quality and dietary intake;
- recognise factors which enable prioritisation of health service activity given limited resources;
- for those undertaking the added clinical component:
- demonstrate competency in establishing a re-hydration regime and treatment in field conditions;
- demonstrate competency in infectious disease management at the individual and community level.
Assessment by two two-hour examinations (30% each); clinical evaluation or research paper for non-clinicians (40%).
