This subject will explore the historical facts that have given rise to the current level of dependencies within Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. The political and cultural conditions, which have influenced Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities in relation to their dependencies, will also be examined. Current dependencies and strategies to address these issues in a community setting will be examined along with their implications.

Learning Objectives:

  1. understanding of the historical context of dependencies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
  2. knowledge of the current dependencies and their impact on contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities;
  3. knowledge of current accepted strategies that address dependencies in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities.

Assessment by participation (10%); project report (20%); examination (70%).
