Management of Health in Child Care Settings

This subject is primarily designed for students who are not registered nurses. As such, it has a focus on promotion and maintenance of health for both carers and children. This prepares the student for NCAC accreditation by including topics such as the principles of nutrition, hygiene, practices of infection control, management of illness when it occurs and providing a safe physical environment. Strategies for involving parents and children in health education will be included.
Learning Objectives:
- to examine health patterns and maintenance;
- to examine immunisation and illness, accidents and emergencies;
- to examine children with special needs;
- to examine environmental safety;
- to examine health promotion.
Assessment by Option 1: (a) a combination of short answer questions submitted progressively for each module; (b) the design and implementation of a parent teaching session which promotes health or safety (the topic can be negotiated); Option 2: (a) select two of the NCAC Principles, critically analyse existing policies and practices. Discuss how these procedures could be improved; (b) design a health care plan for a child with special needs attending the centre.
