Health Education and Promotion for Health Workers

35 lectures, 10 hours practicals, 10 hours workshops. Intensive block mode at a time to be determined.
Available to students enrolled in the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Indigenous Health.

Introduction to the principles of health promotion and the historical context in which health promotion evolved. The cross fertilisation of clinical practice and health promotion. Examines the various elements and models of health promotion and the relationship between health promotion and health education. Examines theories, barriers and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change. Introduction to adult learning. Introduction to the production and evaluation of health education media. Students will be required to complete a community based health education activity.
Learning Objectives:
- describe the principles of health promotion outlined in the Ottawa Charter;
- identify ways in which health promotion and education are relevant to their professional discipline;
- compare and contrast the elements of at least three health promotion models;
- analyse the relationship between health promotion and health education;
- discuss theories about barriers and techniques involved in knowledge and behaviour change;
- critically analyse the role, quality and range of health education media;
- understand the production and evaluation of health education media;
- complete a community based needs analysis for a health project;
- develop a health education pamphlet for a defined audience.
Assessment by examination (40%); project (40%); pamphlet production (20%).
