Indigenous society and the impact of colonisation. The history of indigenous and colonial relations in Australia. The historical, political and cultural conditions which have moulded Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health today. Australian indigenous responses in health and other areas. The current state of political thought and processes. Comparative international indigenous history and policy. the history of health service provision for Indigenous Australians. The political and historical conditions which have built the health worker profession. Trends in the health worker workforce and training in the 1990’s. The future for health workers. Professional development.
Learning Objectives:
- analyse the impact of colonisation on the past and present health of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander society;
- know the major historical eras of indigenous and colonial relations;
- critically examine current political thought and processes today in relation to indigenous affairs and health;
- evaluate the impact of the histories and policies of other nations on the health of their indigenous populations;
- know the major milestones in the history of health service provision for indigenous Australians, e.g. the 1967 referendum, the 1989 National Aboriginal Health Strategy and the 1997 National Goals and Targets;
- know and analyse the political and historical conditions which have built the health worker profession;
- awareness of current trends in the health worker workforce and training in the 1990’s.
