Basic Clinical Skills in Primary Health Care

Townsville

22 lectures, 38 hours practicals, 70 hours clinical placement. Intensive block mode at a time to be determined.

Available to students enrolled in the Diploma or Advanced Diploma of Indigenous Health.

Introduction to basic clinical skills in primary care settings. History taking and interpretation. Managing emergencies. Cross infection and the implications. Pulse, blood pressure, haemoglobin, random blood glucose, urinalysis, respiratory function tests. Collection, labelling, storage and transport of specimens — MSU, stool, throat and wound swabs. Simple wound dressings. Assemble, use and maintain equipment — oxygen and suction, air nebuliser, bag and mask. Completes a Senior First Aid Course.

Learning Objectives:

  1. list and describe the means of cross infection and the implications. List and describe the infections which may be acquired through cross infection;
  2. demonstrate competence in the conduct of universal precautions against cross infection;
  3. take and interpret a range of basic clinical tests and examinations (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, haemoglobin, random blood glucose, urinalysis, respiratory function tests);
  4. collection, labelling, storage and transport of specimens — MSU, stool, throat and wound swabs;
  5. perform a simple wound dressing;
  6. assemble, use and maintain equipment — oxygen and suction, air nebuliser, bag and mask;
  7. complete Senior First Aid Course;
  8. in a case simulation take and interpret a simple client history, record the findings and write referral letters;
  9. have an understanding of basic anatomy and physiology.

Satisfactory pass in assessment methods: clinical placement checklist; St John Ambulance Senior First Aid Certificate (or equivalent); examination prior to clinical placement.
